Today, we are diving into the the more on the 'Clean Beauty' movement and your Oral Beauty Care. With the many studies on certain ingredients showing adverse health affects, concerned consumers are looking for natural healthy alternatives to their regular beauty products than ever before. And rightly so, this evolving uncertainty, includes the products that you use for oral health.
You might be asking yourself. 'Does a toothpaste's ingredients really matter if I'm not swallowing it?' After all, toothpaste isn't in your mouth very long, and even when it is, your certainly don't swallow it.
But here's the deal: The mouth-body connection is very real. Bad oral health can attribute to heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, decreased life expectancy and many other conditions. As a result, having a healthy mouth is paramount and anything we put into our mouth - no matter how briefly - can affect our oral and overall health.

Now back to regular toothpaste, and what you might not want,...
Our mouths are lined with protective mucous membranes which can be irritated, inflamed and infected with toxic ingredients. Our mouths can absorb those chemicals into the bloodstream, while certain ingredients can disrupt the natural microbiome (example: the natural balance of flora; both 'good' and 'bad' bacteria) in our mouths that aid in maintaining oral health. Many of the ingredients in toothpaste have been studied and found to have serious adverse affects on our optimal health. Here are a few of the some common ingredients used in toothpaste, even if all the studies are not conclusive, what ingredients are you willing to put into your mouth:
Fluoride - Fluoride is a highly toxic substance. Although the dental industry considers the use of fluoride 'safe' in low concentrations, studies have been to done to find that fluoride may cause a number of serious adverse health effects including neurological and endocrine dysfunction. And we already know that too much fluoride leads to fluoride toxicity and causes fluorosis (discolored spots on teeth).
Triclosan - Is an ingredient that can be found in toothpaste, body wash, antibacterial soaps and cosmetics. Some research has been done linking Triclosan to decrease thyroid hormones, which leads to a slowing metabolism. Another study was investigating a link between Triclosan and antibiotic resistance and developing skin cancer. Troubling, these studies might not be concluded, could have huge health impacts and might be best to be avoided.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - SLS is a harsh surfactant and can cause skin irritation. Used a cleaning agent and the ingredient that gives toothpaste its foam. Applying SLS to your gums can cause irritation and inflammation and for those suffering with mouth ulcers, SLS has been found to worsen ulcer outbreaks. So best to avoid.
Propylene Glycol - is used to improve product shelf life, appearance and texture. In large quantities, propylene glycol has been linked to damage the central nervous system and heart.
Artificial Sweeteners - There are currently inconsistent and contrary studies on the affects of artificial sweeteners on the body. But some studies show finds that can have great adverse heath reactions, best to have some information to make an educated choice.
Saccharin - had been linked to bladder cancer, brain tumors and lymphoma.
Aspartame - had been found to affect gut bacteria and increase blood glucose link to insulin resistance.
6. Parabens - Used as a preservative to extend shelf life of toothpaste. Parabens have been studied and linked to hormone disruption and even increasing risk of breast cancer. These are widely used preservatives. Even if the levels in individual products and food are considered 'safe', the accumulation in our bodies is sure to cause problems.
This is by far an exhaustive list of common ingredients, studies and findings. But as many of you are aware, even having these studies looking into the links between ingredient use and severe adverse health effects are enough to have consumers looking for alternatives for all their beauty product needs.
