Self-care Opportunity Sundays (S.O.S.) - Herbs

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

Feeling a part of nature has been shown to significantly correlate with life satisfaction, vitality, meaningfulness, happiness, mindfulness, and lower cognitive anxiety. I say 'bring on nature's bliss!' Let's look a bit closer at herbs this Sunday. Many of us use herbs everyday in cooking and baking, for the amazing aroma and unique taste. Others of us may use herbal supplements to increase our health, well being and vitality. No matter what our use(s) is, we are connecting to nature and utilizing the abundance benefits that these botanicals provide. The next time you use an herb, be it home grown and harvested, bought fresh, dried or frozen, be mindful of the imperfect perfection of nature and the abundance of health and beauty benefits that many of these herbs provide.

What are the heath and beauty benefits of your favorite herbs? Here are a few of mine.

  • Peppermint - known benefits in relieving digestive issues, headaches and migraines, freshen breath, relieve tooth pain, improve energy, fight bacterial infections and relieve clogged sinuses, to name a few. Peppermint has a unique scent and flavor that personally makes it one of my favorite herbs.

  • Cinnamon - a highly delicious spice, has many known benefits such as being loaded with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. It's used to improve hormone insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar levels, may reduce risk of heart disease and lower risk and fight infection.

  • Dill - provides a significant boost of Vitamin C, an important antioxidant that helps your body to resist infection. Dill is also a good source of fiber, folate (important for cell division and production of DNA), calcium for healthy bones, riboflavin for cell function and development, manganese, and iron. Used for digestive issues, help relieve inflammatory pain and relieve hiccups. (So, if you have ever been given the advice to drink pickle juice to get rid of your hiccups, it might have been the dill that did the trick!)

  • Thyme - this very fragrant herb is a member of the mint family. Due to its anti fungal properties and potential to destroy harmful organisms, thyme has been used for such things as helping with respiratory issues, relieve sore throats, used in wound care, promote oral health and more.

  • Parsley - is an abundant source of Vitamin C, making it a great antioxidant and immunity booster, promotes bone health and strength, gallstone prevention and freshens breath.

  • Rosemary - contains high amounts of antioxidants and known benefits, including its ability to boost memory, improve mood, protect the immune system and reduce inflammation and pain.

  • Garlic- is a close relative to the onion, but with a stronger more pungent flavor and fragrance. Known for its abilities to regulate blood pressure, soothe tooth aches, boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, fights fungal infection and aids digestion.

The health and beauty benefits of herbs doesn't stop with this short list. Feel free to use this list as inspiration as you research your favorite herb and connect to nature.
